Jim:

Your feedback was spot on: new businesses especially have to get into "active" lead generation mode. If the owner hates cold-calling, he needs to find someone who loves it and hire her on the spot; if he hates it, he won't do it, and if it doesn't get done, he's dead in the water.

As for his question about "warming up the cold calls", my advice is to BE warm. If he's excited and enthusiastic, that'll warm those calls right up!

Jim... Good Advice. The only thing I would add is in the passive area, you need to be findable. Those leads that you do not find through your active prospecting are searching for you and the solution your provide. If they can't find you in a simple search, you don't exist in their mind. Keep up the great posts. ...Howard

I went to a great sales seminar this morning. 60 dollars for a 4 hour seminar and I learned a ton. One idea for prospecting was around finding a synergy with another company that targets the same market as you do, but sells a different product. Assuming you can find a more mature strategic partner who already has leads, this was a no-brainer that I never considered. Loved the idea and now I'm working on finding my partner!

The only thing I would add to Jim's response is that at the time you start a business to need to rely on "acive" more than "passive". Figure out how many leads you need to generate enough prospects to meet your objective, and get active.

Tibor
