5 Tips to get a Recruiter to Read your Resume and Call You.

Your resume is your story, so make sure you tell it well. Focus on communicating your skills and accomplishments honestly and professionally as it relates to the job you are applying for. Make sure you have read the job description and that you are qualified for at least 75% of the job. Your goal should be to sell me on why I should read your resume and why you are the right person for the job I’m recruiting for. If you do that, you will get a call back from me or any other recruiter you’re working with. Try these 5 tips before submitting your resume to ensure you get a call from the recruiter: 1.  Function: If the job is for a Sales Director selling software and you’ve only sold printers your resume will probably not make it past a 30 second read. Apply for jobs where your experience is a benefit to the employer. If you’re looking for a job that is outside your expertise, you should network with people at the company and do some due diligence. Not just send your resume for a job and expect to get a call. 2.  Industry: If you have 15 years of experience in telecommunications and the job is in the healthcare industry, this may not be the right job for you. Most job descriptions have a list of qualifications. Read them, make sure your experience is relevant and that you have at least a few of the “must haves”. 3.  Location: If the job is in Colorado and you live in LA, don’t submit your resume without a local Colorado address. Most companies won’t relocate candidates in this economy, so if you’re willing to relocate on your own, do some digging and come up with a local address for your resume. 4.  Level: If the job description is for a Sales Vice President and your title is Sales Executive, your resume will not make it past a 30 second read so don’t be surprised when you don’t get a call. The same goes for the reverse; if I’m looking for a Sales Executive and you’re a Sales Vice President, it’s not the right fit. 5.  Format – Always use a chronological resume and describe accomplishments; not tasks you’ve done. We don’t want to read a functional resume and try to figure out what you did when. Make it easy for us. Always do a spell check! It takes 20 seconds and if you can’t take 20 seconds to do a spell check, how will you perform on the job? Your resume should match your LinkedIn profile. Better yet, include the link to your LinkedIn profile. These are really easy things to do if you are qualified for the job, so if you find yourself never getting a call back, think about making some changes to your resume. I bet you’ll start getting a few calls.
